The world’s largest companies by assets and market cap

In the last years, many companies have reached impressive dimensions compared to the past. There are several factors that have led to these results, but they will not be analysed in this work, which will be focused on the realization of the ranking of the 30 largest companies in the world by assets and market cap.

Assets refer to the final amount of all gross investments, cash and equivalents, receivables, and other assets as they are presented on the balance sheet of a company. Instead of market capitalization refers to the total euro market value of a company’s outstanding shares. Commonly referred to as market cap, it is calculated by multiplying a company’s shares outstanding by the current market price of one share.

In the ranking of the 30 largest companies in the world by assets for 2019, there are 2 U.S. companies, 7 Chinese companies, 6 U.S. companies, 4 French companies, 4 British companies, 4 Japanese companies, 2 German companies, 1 Canadian company, 1 Dutch company and 1 Spanish company.

At the top five of the ranking, there are five Chinese companies and only one U.S. company. The world’s largest company by assets is ICBC with 4,035 billion USD, followed by Fannie Mae with 3,418 billion USD and China Construction Bank with 3,382 USD. In the fourth place, there is Agricultural Bank of China with 3,293 billion USD and in the fifth place, there is Bank of China with 3,098 billion USD.

In the last three places of the ranking of the companies by assets there are AXA Groupo with 1,035 billion USD, Lloyds Banking Group with 1,016 billion USD and ING Group with 1,014 billion USD.

In the ranking of the 30 largest companies by market capitalization there are 22 U.S. companies, 4 Chinese companies, 1 Dutch company, 1 Swiss company, 1 Taiwanese company and 1 Korean company.

At the top 5 places of the ranking there are five U.S. companies. The world’s largest company by market capitalization is Apple with 961 billion USD, followed by Microsoft with 947 billion USD and Amazon with 916 billion USD. In the fourth place, there is Alphabet with 863 billion USD and in the fifth place, there is Berkshire Hathaway with 516 billion USD.

In the last three places of the ranking of the companies by market cap there are China Construction Bank with 225 billion USD, Nike with 224 billion USD and Taiwan Semiconductor with 222 billion USD.

The data used in the ranking of the world’s largest companies by market capitalization have been collected from the main financial sites on May 2019. The asset and the market cap are expressed in billions of euros. In the rank are included only the companies for which there were public information about these indicators.
