The rank of the largest banks in the world by assets

In the past the banking sector in the world was dominated by the US banks, but in the last year’s everything has changed. The Chinese banks are now dominating the ranking of the world’s largest banks. Also, banks from other countries have become bigger, so they can now have a more important role in the global economy.

In this work, we are going to present the rank of the 122 largest banks in the world by total assets, which still remains today, one of the most widely used indicators for comparing banks with each other. Let’s now see the ranking of the world’s largest banks by assets in 2019.

The top 122 banks include: 22 Chinese banks, 20 US banks, 7 French banks, 7 Japanese banks, 6 British banks, 6 German banks, 6 Canadian banks, 6 Canadian banks, 5 South Korean banks, 5 Brazilian banks, 5 Spanish banks, 4 Australian banks, 4 Swedish banks, 3 Italian banks, 3 Dutch banks, 3 Singaporean banks, 3 Belgian banks, 3 Swiss banks, 2 Danish banks, 2 Taiwanese banks, 1 Austrian bank, 1 Luxembourg bank, 1 Norwegian bank, 1 Qatari bank, 1 Russian bank and 1 Indian bank. The top 10 banks hold combined assets of about $ 29,15 Trillion and the top four are Chinese.

For the eighth year in a row, Industrial & Commercial Bank of China is the largest bank in the world with assets of 3,91 trillion of USD. It is also the world’s largest bank by deposits, loans, number of customers and employees. Four of the top 5 largest banks are Chinese financial institutions. In the second place is China Construction Bank Corp, followed by Agricultural Bank of China and Bank of China. Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group is in the fifth place.

In the last three places of the ranking of the largest banks in the world by assets there are Citizens Financial Group with 163 billion USD, Huishang Bank with 153 billion USD and KeyCorp with 145 billion USD.

The data used in this work have been collected from the main financial sites. For most of the banks, the total assets refer to the 2019 balance sheet, except Credit Mutuel, in which refer to the 2018 balance sheet. The total assets are expressed in billions of USD.
